Emily, there may be Federal records for postmasters, as well. My grandfather was postmaster of Richland in Keokuk County, and I have paperwork from Federal government (like his job application & official appointment from FDR) passed down in the family

it's possible the Missouri to Iowa civil war question may have been that Iowa started sending soldiers very early on, and Missouri, being split, may not have started forming units to go until later.
